University of Wisconsin–Madison

UW Theme Team

UW Theme 2.0 is developed and maintained by the Office of Strategic Communication and the WiscWeb WordPress Service, with collaboration from the Center for User Experience and input from developers, designers, communicators, and users across campus.

Core project partners

Strategic Communication

Digital and Creative teams in the Office of Strategic Communication lead the design of the UW Theme 2.0.

Their mission is to create consistent, creative websites that reflect the UW brand, support accessibility, and improve the digital experience for campus users.

WiscWeb WordPress Service

WiscWeb provides hosting, training, and support for thousands of campus websites built on the UW Theme.

As the university’s central WordPress service, their insight into user needs helps shape the theme and ensure it meets the practical demands of campus websites.

Center for User Experience

The Center for User Experience partners with the UW Theme team to provide guidance on accessibility and usability best practices.

Their research and testing helps inform decisions around color, typography, and functionality, supporting a theme that works better for all users.

We want to thank DoIT Communications for their partnership in helping us communicate the rollout of UW Theme 2.0.

Thank you to campus developers

Developers from schools and colleges across campus have provided valuable feedback on UW Theme 2.0 and WordPress development. Some have also shared code and ideas from their own WordPress themes, helping us find sustainable ways to build with Gutenberg and the WordPress framework.

Their contributions also strengthen the WordPress community at UW by creating more opportunities to share knowledge and learn from one other. We sincerely thank them and look forward to continuing to work with campus developers to improve UW Theme 2.0 and WordPress development on campus.

Additional campus voices

WiscWeb users

We learn a lot from the people who use the current UW Theme every day. Their feedback — shared in surveys, interviews, WiscWeb trainings, feature requests, and testing sessions — is key to prioritizing improvements in UW Theme 2.0.

WordPress developers and site owners

Outside of WiscWeb, developers and web managers using standalone WordPress instances or custom UW Theme sites share feedback that helps inform features and prioritization of future improvements.

Communities of Practice

Across UW, communities of practice help communicate about UW Theme 2.0, share feedback, and shape the future of university web services.
