UW Theme 2.0 patterns
Patterns are groups of blocks combined into pre-made layouts. Whether it’s a full page or section, patterns give you a head start so you’re not starting with a blank page. They help you build faster and keep your site consistent with UW brand and accessibility standards.
Where to find theme patterns
- In the WordPress block editor, open the Block Inserter (+ icon) in the top toolbar.
- Select the Patterns tab.
- Search for a pattern or select a category of patterns to view more.
- Click Explore all patterns to open a modal with a larger preview of all patterns.
- Choose a pattern:
- Click to insert it at your cursor’s location, or
- Drag and drop it directly into your page.

Pattern options
UW Theme 2.0 includes several types of patterns to help you build pages quickly. Some are full-page layouts, while others are smaller sections you can stack together to create your own pages. You can customize patterns, create your own, or save reusable ones that stay in sync across your site.
Page Layout patterns
Page Layout patterns are complete layouts you can use as a starting point. Insert one, then adjust or replace sections as needed.

Section patterns
Section patterns are categorized in the inserter and include things like banners, cards, galleries, and more. Stack them together to build out your page quickly.

Page Title patterns
When you start a new page, the Title block is already in place by default. Page Title patterns go a step further by giving you different layout options with the Title block built in.

Custom patterns (non-synced)
You can also create your own patterns in WordPress. These are non-synced, meaning each time you insert the pattern it becomes independent—changes you make affect only that instance, not every copy. This is useful when you want a repeatable starting layout, but still need flexibility to edit each version separately.
Custom patterns you create appear under My Patterns in the Block Inserter, as well as under any optional category name you’ve assigned to them.

Synced patterns
Synced patterns are a feature of WordPress Core. When you create one, any updates you make will automatically apply everywhere the pattern is used across your site.
This makes them ideal for creating reusable content you want to keep consistent—like a group of links, recurring notice, or contact information.
Toggle on/off the Synced option when first adding a new pattern.

How to manage your patterns
You can manage custom patterns you create in the WordPress Admin.
- Go to Appearance, and then select Design.
- Click Patterns
- Select My Patterns or the custom category name assigned to your pattern(s) to view them.
- Select the Actions menu for a pattern (three stacked dots) to Edit, Duplicate, Rename, or Delete a pattern.
